Superyacht Base Brisbane Marine Industry Cluster

As a River City, a cruise ship destination and major port with a marine national park at its doorstep, Brisbane has taken to the water for recreation, commerce, fishing and transport.  These activities have developed an industry cost competitive to Asia, cheaper than Europe and North America and boasting a high calibre of workmanship, service, track record in refitting, refurbishing and maintaining superyachts.

Within the two major shipyards, Brisbane Marine Industry Park and Rivergate, and the privately owned yards, Brisbane houses a thriving marine manufacturing and servicing industry of 153 businesses covering the gambit of services from Electrical Engineering to Interior Fitout to specialist Superyacht Finishes.  Indeed, Brisbane has the capability and capacity to rebuild a superyacht or construct a new one!

Through Superyacht Base Brisbane’s network, the city has

  • 55 hectares of dedicated marine industrial land;
  • 4 straddle lifts capable of lifting 350 tonnes;
  • Multiple slipways capable of accommodating vessels up to 255m/826’ or 2500 tonnes;
  • Over 5000 skilled employees;
  • The only Australian port in the Dockwise Yacht Transport network; and
  • A regularly maintained and chartered 15 metre commercial channel through the cruising grounds of Moreton Bay, past the Port of Brisbane up to the city centre.

Brisbane is located in the south-east corner of Queensland on the 27º South parallel.  With a fast growing population, businesses and individuals are attracted to the city’s climate, lifestyle and opportunities.  As a subtropical climate with brilliant hot summers and clear mild winters, Brisbane enjoys sunnier days than Florida and warmer winter days than the Bahamas.

The allure of Australian and Queensland waters has increased the rate of superyachts visiting by an average of 42% every year over the last five years.  Brisbane is receiving its lion share as the only Australian port in the Dockwise Yacht Transport network, a perfect launching point for the Great Barrier Reef as well as for the internationally renowned superyacht work completed in the city.

In the previous two years alone, the following superyachts have visited Brisbane for significant reconstruction, refit and maintenances

  • Ulysses (Winner of Australian Superyacht Refit of the Year, 2007)
  • Seafaris (Winner of the International Superyacht of the Year and the Australian Superyacht Construction of the Year, 2007)
  • Ophelia
  • Lazy Z
  • Kokomo
  • Takapuna
  • Slipstream
  • Tristan

Cruising in Brisbane

Moreton Bay is a marine national park brimming with marine life of the coast of Brisbane.  The islands of Moreton Bay are undoubtedly Brisbane’s best-kept secrets – such exquisite island escapes close to the city centre.  Their natural beauty easily rivals the nation’s most celebrated seaside escapes, but it’s the unbelievable soft adventure experiences that now make them sought after. Moreton Bay and her islands provide an aquatic playground for snorkelling, sand tobogganing, diving, skiing, sailing and swimming.

Cruising to Fraser Island and beyond……..

Fraser Island needs little introduction. The World Heritage listed destination – a place of exceptional beauty with uninterrupted white beaches flanked by strikingly coloured sand cliffs and over 100 freshwater lakes - is only a day’s steaming from Brisbane to the southern tip of the island.

Less than a day’s cruise from the northern tip of Fraser Island is Lady Elliott Island – a coral cay island paradise.  Lady Elliott Island marks the start of the world renowned, protected and heritage listed, Great Barrier Reef.  Like her sister islands, Lady Musgrave Island and Heron Island (further to the north), the coral cays are touted as some of the best diving locations in the world due to the water clarity and temperature plus the easy accessibility – dives start from the beach.
